When looting
was commonplace just yesterday, a shout will emerge as the crowds of people
approached....” BAYEZA”, which simply means ‘the looters are coming”. South Africa
is a land of plenty and it is common among us to lighten the burdens of society
as a laughing matter; to ease our pains, to get by, to cope and therefore man
oeuvre our lives peacefully. We have been hurt from all sides of history, and
through that we have developed naturally, these coping mechanisms. For most of
us who never partook in the looting incidents nationwide, we coined the word, ‘Bayeza’
as a greeting and that was met with smiles and laughter.
BAYEZA
IS A SOLO EXHIBITION BY NKOSINATHI THOMAS NGULUBE THAT WILL OPEN IN CONJUNCTION
WITH THE LAUNCH OF THOMARTS GALLERY’S NEW PREMISES. NKOSINATHI INTERTWINES THE
COVID PANDEMIC WITH THE LOOTING ISSUES AS ONE BODY, INCORPORATING HUES AND
TINTS.
THE
TWO CANNOT BE SEPARATED IN REALITY OF THE PRESENT SOUTH AFRICA.
THIS SOLO SHOW IS A BLEND OF ABSTRACT, CONCEPTUAL, TWISTED AND REDUCTION OF VISUAL FACT. HE RELATES TO THIS BODY OF WORK ON CANVAS AS CONVERSATIONS IN HUMOUR.
