It was quite common to show public displays of affection between people of same sex in a non-romantic relationship. The photo was taken in Philippe Koudjina's studio. In this set-up, people would commonly look away from the camera, however it seems that the artist has prompted one of the men to look straight at the camera, creating a conniving connection with the viewer.
